Most Shoei helmets, including the excellent RF 1000 range, usually run around twice the price this is currently being offered for, and that not only makes sense to your wallet, but more importantly your skull.
I confess I bought this mainly on price, but I actually like the "Diabolic" paint job, although it may not be to everyone's taste

I'm not even going near the debate on wearing a helmet being a legal requirement (here in Minnesota, it is optional, not mandatory) but if you have decided to wear a helmet while riding, you can't go far wrong with Shoei.
Most helmets sold in the USA have the DOT rating as a minimum, more expensive and arguably better helmets also carry the SNELL safety rating, whichever you choose, something is better than nothing generally if you take a spill. The RF-1000 goes beyond both of these standards - this is from the manufacturer:-

A lot of this may sound like a sales pitch but personal experience is this:

One of the most lightweight and comfortable helmets I have ever worn, I finished a 6 hour rally this weekend in hot weather, and the ventilation system kept me cool, while neck fatigue was kept to a minimum compared to some of my older, heavier helmets.
Initially, I was worried that the XL was too small, it feels a little snug, but the cheekpads soon soften for a great fit, without head rattle, feeling loose, or excessive wind noise at high speed. The liner and pads are also removable for washing.
Standard visor set up, and chin strap rounds it out.

This is my 3rd Shoei in 25 + years of riding, and definitely the lightest and best I have owned. The only thing I didn't like on the model was the chin strap fastening, I have always liked the full clip and button assembly key push closure, this double D back and over strap with a fiddly fastener on the loose end works OK, but loses this half a star in my book.Final thought, when you are considering spending a lot of money on a motorcycle, doesn't it make sense to spend enough to buy a very safe helmet?
