(More customer reviews)If you like this style of lid,buy this one.You won't regret it.Pretty faithful replica of the old pudding basin helmets of the 50s and 60s,and the price can't be beat.Plus,it's DOT certified, which brand "D" ain't.DOT certs may be arbitrary, but at least it makes it legal in all 50 states.
I bought mine to complete the ensemble with my retro Triumph Scrambler.I've had it almost two years, worn it nearly everyday, and it's held up well. There are a few chips in the cheap matte paint, but that's my fault, not the helmets(and besides,a little "distressing"just adds to the flavor of the helmet,in my opinion). The interior, straps, etc.show no signs of wear at all.
I've been riding motorcycles for over 35 years, and this is the most comfortable open face/half helmet that I've ever worn. You'll forget you have it on.It's super light, with unlimited peripheral vision, and it's close-to-the-head profile keeps it from catching the wind the way a larger lid does.I've ridden at well over The Ton(100 MPH)on my un-faired Triumph, with none of the "parachute around the neck" effect I've experienced with every other open face helmet I've ever owned.I think maybe the fairly snug fitting neck curtain has something to do with that, too.
When I first put it on,it felt very "round".That is to say,I could feel pressure on the front and back, but none on the sides. After wearing it a few times, though,it conformed to the shape of my head, and, like I said,I forget I'm even wearing it.
About 4 months after I got the helmet,Jafrum sent me a recall notice on it,stating that subsequent testing had shown that some helmets had defects, and would fail DOT testing. It had been discontinued, and I didn't like the alternative helmets they were offering as replacements.I looked elsewhere for a replacement, but didn't find a suitable one,so I decided that mine was probably(hopefully!!)not one of the defective ones. That's how much I like this thing.I still wore it even though it might not protect me the way it was designed to.I was very happy to see that Jafrum, and others, now have this helmet(DOT approved) back in their catalogues, and I am ordering another one to replace my "defective" unit.
It missed out on me giving it 5 stars because it's very noisy.Wind noise is horrible,I think because the neck curtain flares out at the top, just in front of the ears, and creates noisy turbulence, which it channels right into your ears. Not a real problem with me,since I always wear earplugs,or noise canceling earbuds with an MP3 player anyway, but it's enough to keep it from getiing a 5 star rating from me.The chin strap could be an inch longer, too.
Now,here's the caveat:On another review, here,of this helmet in another colour, the reviewer said that his helmet had about an inch and a half of EPS.Mine only has about three quarters of an inch.If the manufacturer had to add another 3/4 of an inch of EPS to make it pass DOT testing, that would theoretically make the whole helmet an inch and a half wider. It's possible, then, that all that stuff I said about it not catching the wind, etc.might just go out the window. From looking at the pictures though,I just don't see it.If that's the case, when I get my new helmet,I'll come back and amend my review.
